Carolina Panthers Football Team: A Brief Outline

Founded on October 26, 1993, Carolina was selected as the 29th NFL franchise and the first expansion team since 1976. Carolinas was formed under the esteemed patronage of the owner and founder, Jerry Richardson. In 1992, a list of these areas was open to a potential NFL team: Baltimore, Maryland, St. Louis, Missouri, Memphis, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Florida and the Carolinas represented by Charlotte. However, it was Richardson's dream that led to the announcement of NFL franchise bid for Carolinas Panthers. With an impressive support by fans to finance an NFL expansion team across Carolina, Carolinas Panthers came into being with the financing of the 73200-seater stadium. The finance was arranged from the sale of Permanent Seat Licenses, club seats and luxury boxes.

Dom Capers, former defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers was signed on as the inaugural head coach. Rod Smith was selected the first player by the Panthers. Other players selected were Greg Kragen, Jack Trudeau and Mark Carrie among others. The Panthers were the first expansion team to win the annual 'Hall of Fame Game' winning the first game against Jacksonville Jaguars 20-14 on July 29, 1995. After a quick stint by George Seifert, the Panthers hired John Fox, New York Giants defensive coordinator, known for his defensive discipline, as the teams' third head coach.
