The Astros, playing in the Eastern Division of the National League, are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, based in Texas. The Astros started their professional life as the Colt .45s, when the National League, which were a 10 team league then, granted a franchise on October 17, 1960, to Judge Roy Hofheinz – who had earlier tried to form a new professional league, the now aborted Continental League.
As ‘Colts,’ the Houston Astros played their first game in the National League on April 10, 1962. Their home ground, temporarily, was the Colts Stadium, and the Astros played there until 1965, when they moved to their new Stadium – the Astrodome – in 1965.
The Homes Of The Astros
The Astrodome, the indoor baseball stadium, was inaugurated on April 9, 1965, and the same day, the ‘Colts’ were renamed the Houston Astros. The Houston Astros, committed to build a domed stadium to fight against the oppressive heat and humidity of Houston, designed the Astrodome based loosely on the Colosseum at Rome (built around 70–80 AD). This was the home of the Astros up to 1999.
The Astrodome was a multipurpose stadium built for both, football and baseball. This was one of the first stadiums in the United States to have an artificial turf – the Astro Turf. The stadium was also one of the first to have individual, theater type seats, all over the stadium, in addition to having luxury seats and club seating.
In 2000, the Astros moved into their new home, then known as the Enron Field. This was the first stadium in Houston with a retractable roof. The Enron Field had natural grass, as against the Astro Turf of their previous home. Built especially for the Astros, the 40,950 seats Enron Field then cost $250 million to build.
With the bankruptcy of the energy giant – Enron – who had bought the naming rights for the stadium, the Astro management bought back the rights to the name, and renamed the stadium, the Astro Field, on February 7, 2002. However, on June 5 the same year, Minute Maid – a Texas based fruit juice subsidiary of Coca Cola – bought the naming rights of the stadium for 28 years, at a price over $100 million. Since then, the stadium is known as the Minute Maid Park.
Major League Titles
The Astros have won the Western Division titles twice and the Central Division titles four times. In addition, they have one National League Pennant, but have never won a World Series title.
Though the Astros started 2005 very poorly, as a wild card entrant, they beat the Eastern Division champions – the Atlanta Braves, 3-1 to take the National League Division Series. They went on to win the National League Championship Series by beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2, but lost the World Series to the Chicago White Sox.
