Playing in the Eastern Division of the National League, the NY Mets, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, is based in Flushing, Borough of Queens, NYC.
After the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the NY Giants to California, the City of NY was without any MLB team. In 1960, when four new expansion franchises were created, NYC was awarded one, to begin play in 1962. The principal owners of this National League franchise were the Paysons – Joan Whitney and Charles Shipman – once minority owners of the New York Giants. It was decided to call the team the New York Mets and the sale of New York Mets tickets took off.
The Ballparks Of The Mets
For the first two years, 1962 and 1963, the Mets called the Polo Grounds its home. This was the fourth Polo Grounds, the first and original built in the 1890s for Polo. The fourth Polo Grounds is the most popular, and the one the fans mean when a mention is made.
In 1964, the Mets moved base to the newly constructed Shea Stadium – officially the William A. Shea Municipal Stadium. Originally it was supposed to be named the Flushing Meadows Stadium, but was named to honor William A. Shea – the man responsible for bringing National League baseball back to NY, after being abandoned by the Dodgers and the Giants.
The Shea Stadium cost $28.5 million to build, and after 29 months, opened on April 17, 1964.
Major League Titles
The Mets have won five Eastern Division titles, four National League Pennants, and two World Series titles.
They won their first World Series in 1969, bringing about one of the greatest upsets in the history of the World Series. The Mets were not highly regarded at the start of the 1969 season. They had never won more than 73 games in any season. They powered past the stronger Chicago Cubs to win their first National League Eastern Division title. Next, they swept aside the much-favored Atlanta Braves in three games, to win the National League Championship Series.
This took them to meet the flawless Baltimore Orioles in the World Series match up. The Mets lost the first game, and then took the next four games, to win the best of seven series 4-1.
They won their second World Series title after 17 years. On the way, they beat the Philadelphia Phillies to take the Eastern Division title, and then took the Houston Astros, 4-2, to win the League Championship Series. They met the Boston Red Sox for the World Series title, splitting the first six games equally, and winning the rain delayed seventh and the title.
