You can now cheer for your team not only from your homes but live at the stadium too. They are a professional American football team owned by Dan Rooney based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Northern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team are the oldest football franchise in the American Football Conference. The team has played in Super Bowls six times and has won the Super Bowls five times. Also they have participated in 13 Conference Championships Games and have hosted Conference Championships Games more than any other NFL franchise.

Known originally as the Pittsburgh Pirates, they joined the NFL in 1933. In 1940, the franchise was reformed and renamed the Steelers owing to the prominence of the city’s steel industry.

Mike Tomlin is the head coach who took the reigns of the franchise from Cowher who resigned on January 5, 2007, citing a need to spend more time with his family.

Matches Played

They lost the first match played on September 20, 1933 with a score of 23-2, against New York Giants. For quite a few times, they had faced player shortages forcing it to merge with other NFL franchises. During 1943, the team merged with Philadelphia Eagles and formed "Phil-Pitt Eagles", commonly known as "Steagles." In 1944 Steelers merged with the Chicago Cardinals and were called Card-Pitt.

1n 1947, the team made the pay-outs for the first time and tied with Philadelphia Eagles at 8-4. This led to a tie-breaking playoff game at Forbes Field, which they lost at 21-0. However, the Steelers did qualify for the Playoff-Bowl in 1963 the second best team in the conference but was not considered as an official play-off.

In 1970, following the American Football League and the National Football League merger, they were one of the three-old guard NFL teams to move to the newly formed American Conference along with Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts.

Hall of Fame

The franchise have an amazing history of some of the most notable Hall of Fame holders. "Mean" Joe Greene in 1969, Terry Bradshaw and Mel Blount in 1970, Jack Ham in 1971, Franco Harris in 1972, finally, four such holders; Mike Webster, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, and Jack Lambert in 1974. The franchise is considered as the only team in NFL history that churned out four Hall of Fame stalwarts in one year.

With such a strong and potential team, they made payoffs in eight seasons and became the only team in NFL history to win four Super Bowls in six years and the first one to win more than two.

The three major rivals are considered to be Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Lucky Mascot

Celebrating the organization's 75th anniversary, the franchise introduced a new mascot “Steely McBeam” on August 8th, 2007.
