The Blue Jays are, at present, the only Major League Baseball (MLB) team from outside the United States. Based in Ontario, the Blue Jays play in the Eastern Division of the American League. The Blue Jays also happen to be the only professional baseball team from outside the United States to have won the World Series, and that too, twice.

The franchise came into existence in 1976, when the Toronto Blue Jays joined the American League, to begin playing the following season. Labatt Breweries then - with the Imperial Trust, along with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, being the minority owners - owned the franchise.

The Blue Jays won their first game, 9-5, against the Chicago White Sox, on April 7, 1977 - the field covered entirely by snow. This was the only MLB game ever played thus. The team also scored its first two home runs, courtesy Doug Ault.

The early 1980s was when the Blue Jays dramatically started to improve their winning percentages. They finished the 1982 season 78-84, and the 1983 season with their first winning record – 89-73. They finished in fourth place, nine games behind the Baltimore Orioles, who eventually won the World Series. They finished the next season with the same record – 89-73, but were second, behind the Detroit Tigers, who, too, eventually won the World Series in 1984.

In 1985, the Toronto Blue Jays won their first championship, their first Eastern Division title. This was the first of the five Eastern Division titles they have won, so far. The Blue Jays won their first American League Pennant in 1992, and followed it up with their first World Series title, the same year. The following year, they repeated the feats, winning both, the American League Pennant as well as the World Series title.

The Home Ground

The Exhibition Stadium was the first home of the Toronto Blue Jays, from 1977 to 1989. This is where they played their first game, on April 7, 1977. The Stadium had always posed a problem due to its proximity to Lake Ontario. One was that the Stadium was quite cold, especially at the beginning and at the end of the season.

On June 3, 1989, the Blue Jays moved base to a new stadium, then known as the SkyDome. This multipurpose stadium near the shores of Lake Ontario is the first stadium to have a fully retractable motorized roof.

In 2004, Rogers Communications – the owners of the Toronto Blue Jays – acquired the SkyDome from its then owners, Sportsco International LP. Though the SkyDome, since 2005, is officially known as Rogers Centre, it is still popularly called the SkyDome, even by its owners.
